Learn the fundamentals of self-reliant diving within the no-decompression limits.

The i.a.c. Self-Reliant Diver course is designed for dedicated recreational divers who want to learn how to handle problems underwater independently and safely. The course teaches self-rescue techniques, safe surfacing procedures after losing a dive buddy, and how to resolve simple underwater problems. The goal is to give divers the skills and confidence to respond effectively and independently in emergency situations. The course builds personal responsibility and the ability to stay calm and safe even when faced with unexpected challenges.

  • Use, configuration, and handling of redundant equipment systems

  • Safety checks and routine inspection of equipment to ensure operational readiness
  • Managing environmental factors such as currents and visibility, and adapting your dive planning accordingly
  • Documentation and logbook maintenance
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Proof of medical fitness to dive, not older than 2 years
  • Proof of i.a.c. AOWD and i.a.c. TEC Basic certification, or equivalent in accordance with the current i.a.c. equivalency list
  • Dive log showing at least 80 logged dives, 20 of which were deeper than 20 meters
  • Complete diving equipment — single tank with twin valve, small twinset, or sidemount configuration — with a primary gas mix

A mandatory requirement for the successful completion of the respective course is the practical training. This will incur additional costs. These costs are to be paid separately to the DiveCenter selected by you.

The pricing for the practical training is up to the respective DiveCenter and can vary accordingly.

Upon successful completion of the course and practical training, you will receive your certification confirming that you have successfully completed the i.a.c. TEC Self Reliant course.

Limit after successful course completion

  • No-decompression dives using air or nitrox as the primary gas mix
  • Maximum dive depth as specified by your highest certification

The purchase of an i.a.c. e-Academy course does not automatically lead to certification of the respective course. For a valid certification, the required practice units according to the Training Record Card must also be carried out with an i.a.c. instructor. Instructor and be finally approved by this instructor. The additional costs for the practice units/examinations are to be paid by the purchasing person to the DiveCenter itself.
